I had blogged about my sad experience at the Kanpur IIT event Megabucks here.

And I’ve been recieving a whole lot of comments on my blog from enraged IIT-ians who feel that I’m accusing the whole bretheren out there… So this goes out as an explanation to the whole enraged bretheren.

To all the IIT-K guys that are offended:

Let me make my statements clear once again. There is no need to be enraged about critical feedback… The world is that way… I had expectations from an IIT. They dint match. I was saddened… I said it…

And I am ready to name the students and their branches in Engineering that were out there setting up the show. I dont remember the show being run by Business School students as one of the commenters claims. But lets not take things political… Lets look at the issue in direct concern…

And, the first rule before an accusation, be sure of the facts. My blog mentioned thus:

Not all IITians, With all due respect I repeat, NOT ALL IIT-IANS belong to the top-notch category. There are definitely guys that would fail the engineering education standards in TamilNadu colleges. I still dont know how they got in, but then yeah, they have successfully degraded the stamp that IIT brands them with!!!

Read the paragraph guys. It starts with: Not all IITians, With all due respect I repeat… The words NOT ALL IIT-IANS is in bold. If you’re one among those guys who is world class, I definitely bow my head in respect to your talents and capabilities… And I’ll definitely say that we (Himanshu and I) were not fortunate enough to meet up with you guys…

The people I saw there were definitely not the guys that I wanted to see from an IIT. And hence the comment…

And it is so further unfortunate that you guys (whomsoever it may concern) have taken this issue a tad bit too personal and have been forwarding the link of the post all across your e-mail chains… One of your Megabucks ’08 organizers contacted us with regard to the post and asked us about feedback and what we felt wrong. This is true IIT class.

iit-mail

I’ve put up a snapshot of the mail for your references… And it does say Final year student, Electrical Engineering doesnt it??? Or is my English that bad????

That mail is true professionalism in the whole sense of the word… Knowing that things did not go well. And learn from the mistakes. I’d definitely love to meet that person and say that he’s worth the trouble…

As for the others commenting on my capabilities for taking up the JEE, and their personal views on Tamil Nadu’s Engineering colleges, I stand to lose nothing. My engineering education is done long back…

And as I mentioned up ahead in this post… I like critical back… In both directions… But not something that is baseless and just an enraged thoughtless comment…

Ciao…

  • Hey Ashwin,
I agree with what Abhilash has told,he has all the valid points. It all depends on how people take the feedback eg. If you criticize me,you give me room for improvement but if look the other way , I may also feel that I am insulted. So,the bottom line is "It depends on how I take the feedback..be it positive or negative"

Also,I did not feel that in your post you tried to give Gyaan to others, you just indicated the loopholes in the event...I guess the best way to solve this problem is "to keep mum"..Silence gives more message than words :)

The "class" is not defined by IITians. I personally believe that there's nothing "class" in general for IITians. Mastering PCM of 12th makes no one great.
It's a pity thing which anyone can achieve.

Moreover I don't think JEE has any kind of test for management skills or communication/composition skills or any character test! (It only tests for PCM knowledge that too of intermedeate level.) And I also think that "engineering education standards in TamilNadu colleges" are also not based on these qualities. It also must be a test on PCM but only slightly easier than JEE. Plz tell me, do they really take interviews and personality test for Engg. admissions??

The vision of IIT, as defined by Hon. J.L.Nehru, when IITs were established in the first five year plan was "to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the country." So the country should expect from IIT graduates to contribute to same.

I have little to do with your views about Megabucks. It's really sad that it was not par with expectations. All that fooding and contact stuff should not be like that. But to question the stabdards of JEE (which tests PCM) for your above mentioned problem doesn't seems logical. The are different things and have no relation. Don't they?

Whether or not IITs are producing technology personels is also independent of the thing due to which you were disappointed. These are to be debated separately.

So if one had to question the so-called "IIT class" it should be on the basis of wether or not aim of IIT is fulfilled. Not on the basis of whether or not IIT people are able to conduct a business fest or not.

To expect a God-like stature from humans is not justice.

I never feel sorry to stamd with what I feel is just and true. I worship justice and I love my alma-mater. Don't get confused b/w the two verbs.....

    THE END.
  • Thanx for your comment @Abhilash.

The whole feedback post came out as a result of my observations @ IIT-K. Any IIT is known greatly for its fests as it is for the education it imparts...

But here we were, completely lost... No one to contact... No one responding. Figuring out bare necessities like food...

I do accept the fact that I'm no pro at things... But then, the presentations there were pathetic... Ask Himanshu about it...

The icing on the cake were the two comments in my previous post regarding the event that sparked it all...
You may think you're something... But thats not wat everyone else thinks of you...
  • Ashwin,

I had read your earlier post, and forwarded them to my mates at CEL, BITS Pilani where I used to work when I was at BITS Pilani. Quite a few times, when we used to get guests/speakers at BITS, we failed to hand them a good, interesting audience; and at the end the guest/speaker would've been extremely disappointed/disgruntled ... which really hurt us. We continuously made efforts for such things not to happen, but at times, things spiraled beyond control - thanks to a huge fest happening, audience being scattered, exams etc etc.

I completely can understand the IIT-K student-side of the story. And I empathize with them. But what is particularly delightful is your candid feedback and that amazing email by the IIT-K organizer thanking you for that. That is, as you said 'IIT-class'.

Frankly, you shouldn't give a damn to all those trolls who hate candid feedback and blindly worship their alma-mater without accepting the fact that the race to perfection has no finish line.
