Almost every company out there hires assuming growth. So what happens when the economy tanks? That means that you'll now have to assume degrowth, unless your business model is resilient enough to be able continue to grow even in this environment. Now I don't think anyone has a crystal ball that can help predict demand for a companies product and services in a recessionary economy. Hence, faced with shrinking profits (and probable losses), a company then has to do whatever it can to ensure that it is still viable.

I'm not condoning or justifying crappy treatment of employees, just pointing out that it is sometimes impossible to run a company as such a tight ship that you can account for recession a year in advance with a high degree of certainty, and hence, cutting costs is absolutely unavoidable.

Even well run, highly respected companies (like the Tatas, for example), are facing the pinch, so I don't quite agree with the implication that the management of IT companies is clueless.

Hi

Just found your blog Ashwin :)

"...attended one barcamp religiously in his / her life, I think its time you put that knowledge into action."

Shouldn't that include a Hackday also? :P

And the thing about opinions and assholes, found that funny.
I heard that first in a Dirty Harry movie, where Clint Eastwood says "Opinions are like a#%holes. Everybody has one" :)

Nice post!

May be I missed LinkedIn :) But during these tough times, you can open your Card Holder and check which guy would be useful for you(either for a job or for your venture).

These services would still get new clients byt slashing their price but what about Product companies (no more purchasing power, Chinese products might flourish MORE now)

And yeah, nice to see you around on my blog after ages!!!
>> I came after ages since you posted an article AFTER AGES :)

Keep Blogging !!!

Himanshu,

I agree with the points you said... And yes, that was why I had a question directed to the people who run companies:

# If you were interested in saving some money back then… You wouldnt have to do all this shit right?

Linked in was also mentioned on the post... And I am with you on how NRNM put the blame on the employees. Quite a lot of them might be fake... but hey, check them... check yourselves...

I guess that states how I feel on the same issue :-)

And yeah, nice to see you around on my blog after ages!!!

Well Ashwin,
I felt, I would be an appropriate person to comment on this post.Though I was not laid off but my earlier experience with a VERY early stage startup and than searching for a job [After the Lehman Brothers nightmare] has been quite exciting....now again with a startup :)

I would like to add couple of things:

1..No free biscuits, tea / snacks is an excellent way of cost cutting for a BIG organization where it would definitely spend at least lakhs of rupees daily. However, the downfall of this is that "We as employees are so used to it that such small moves would definitely send a chill in the employees[indicating something is really wrong with the company]..In fact, this is the best starting point to cut ample amount of costs.

2. Now if we feel that work is less/no work, we as Job Seekers need to be smart...gone are the days when jobs came from Naukri..now everything is so much dependent on sites like LinkedIn [from where I got a job in the current startup] and we need to be smart enough to target the right ladder of people[ie the INFLUENTIAL people] who can REALLY help you getting a job.

3. Just like Employees, companies need to be SMARTER.... Now gone are the days when Interviewees said "I have another XYZ offer, how much can you PAY"...So the company can now let go non-performers and get guys with more potential on board at a much cheaper cost [I haven't heard if any company is doing this :)] and not to forget SATYAM guys would even WORK FOR FREE :)

4. Though this is just a guess, Satyam was exposed since the Gafla was way too much...but I feel that most of the SERVICES companies would be doing this GAFLA but at a scale where things can still be reverted back.In fact NRNM gave a very tainted statement "We don't want any employess from Satyam", his statement should have been "All are welcome :)" [Remember it is a DAMN cheap deal, like Buy one get one Free :)]

Would love to see your remarks on the same.
